Previously the Birmingham International Comics Show, BICS remains at the Thinktank in Brum this year and seems to have usurped Bristol as THE big UK show of the year.
Unfortunately for small pressers a table cost is £120 though last year the price…
No idea. She definitely hasn't done it before, at least not while I've been around. Am I right in remembering that this was the first one she did? No idea at all.
The Demon Tomato, which is an autobiographical account of the time the human race was wiped-out in the 90s. You can get that in Travelling Man Manchester or Newcastle, or here: http://snipurl.com/3fm2h
Nemesis Fleet - an actual proper comic, with me on keyboard and Abby on pencils, which you can read about here: http://nemesisfleet.blogspot.com
Which comic creators do you admire?
Jeff Smith, Chris Ware, Richard Elson, Nigel Kitching, Dan Abnett, Robert Kirkman, Brian K Vaughn, Stuart Immonen, Brian Bendis, and lots of "that bloke who did"s.
About Me:
I invented comics when I was very young. Of course in those days we called them "picture-stories," and the word "comics" only took over when I found out other people had already thought of it and named it without having the courtesy to consult me first.
I still make picture-stories. If you ever read my comic "The Demon Tomato," you might see evidence for the fact that I didn't know about American comics until I was about eighteen. I only had UK comics like the Beano to go by, so you'll find a puzzling mashup of sensibilities: single-page characters and gags, with storylines only lasting five to seven pages before moving on to something else, but all of it attempting to add-up to a longer storyline - which was something else I thought I'd invented.
So my comic doesn't really know about the rules of comics, which makes it a bit of a muddle and I'll be impressed if you can follow it at all. But it's friendly, and some people seem to like it, and at least it gets better after issue two, promise.
Hey no problem, i didn't draw much anyway - i was too busy watching you guys! I will post something up eventually, i have a lot of random things which i cud put up, but nothing thats an actual comic strip :P
Hey you demon tomato! I am sorry, I don't have anything online... no website. I've only published a couple of short comics in french, but while I am in Manchester, i'll try to create some new stories in english...Long live the Demon T.!
Thanks for that. It can be as long as you wish and it'll go out in the Oct newsletter in early Nov, so no rush. I have photos of the table that I can add to it too.
Hello Dave,
I've read your blog entry on BICS this morning and enjoyed it, I didn't know that girl came back to buy DT. That's great.
I was wondering if you could do a write up of the show for the October Newsletter, from the perspective of being behind a table for the first time and being part of the MCC?
Adam.
