About Me:

I'm a comics and features writer who has worked in comics and magazine publishing in the UK for over 20 years. My day job is Managing Editor of ROK Comics, which enables comics creators to create or adapt their strips for mobile phones, which can be delivered worldwide through WAP subscription and single downloads -- potentially reaching a much bigger audience than that for web-based comics. In addition to comics delivered via the main ROK Comics web site and WAP service, we have partner services in China (where some strips are being translated into Chinese), Pakistan and South Africa, with more in the pipeline.

I've written strips for various companies such as Marvel, Fleetway, Lucky Bag and commercial companies seeking to use comics as a promotional device. I've also edited various magazines including the official Babylon 5, Doctor Who, Star Trek and Star Wars Magazines.

My British comics news and features web site, downthetubes.net, web site features news about British comics and a somics writing guide.

John Freeman: Who?

I'm a comics and features writer who has worked in comics and magazine publishing in the UK for over 20 years. My British comics news and features web site, downthetubes.net, web site features news about British comics and a comics writing guide.

I'm working part time for ROK Comics on their Indian comics platform and other mobile comic related projects and as an editor for some of Titan Books print British comics collections, as well as a few other projects for other companies.

ROK Comics enables comics creators to create or adapt their strips for mobile phones, which can be delivered worldwide through WAP subscription and single downloads -- potentially reaching a much bigger audience than that for web-based comics. Unfortunately the parent company was hit hard by the credit crunch and development there has been scaled back, until very recently (August 2009).

I've written comic strips for various companies such as Marvel, Fleetway, Lucky Bag and commercial companies seeking to use comics as a promotional device. Currently I'm writing a science fiction strip, Ex Astris, for the British SF comics magazine Spaceship Away.

I've also edited various magazines including the official Babylon 5, Doctor Who, Star Trek and Star Wars Magazines.

SciFi Art Wanted

I'm looking for samples of SciFiArt (not comics, illustration) for a possible project. If you are a SciFi illustrator and are interested in promoting your work send me ONE 300 dpi image via johnfreeman6-moonlandinganniversaryart@yahoo.co.uk. Please remember to include your contact details, a short 50-100 word bio and preferred web site link. At this stage the work will not be published: this is just for test purposes. I look forward to seeing your sample!

Promoting Comics: Your Thoughts Welcome

Over on my downthetubes Forum (which is primarily devoted to British comics) I’ve started a discussion about promoting comics with a view to creating a “resource page” for creators looking for ways to publicise their work: http://bit.ly/16qJVM (short link)

Primarily, at the moment the page with edited info here: http://downthetubes.ning.com/notes/Comic_Review_Sites

Manchester Newspapers: Stop the Cuts

Not quite comics, but definitely not good news if you've ever used your local papers to promote events or projects like I have (our Morecambe Visitor ran a two-page spread on Ex Astris when it started running in Spaceship Away)....

Management at the Manchester Evening News group, which is owned by the Guardian, want to make nearly 80 journalists redundant - roughly a third of its editorial staff - and close all the offices of its Greater Manchester weekly news… Continue

Wow, thanks for all that info John. I've added an event to the site to spread the word, I don't know why the Engine boys haven't done so already. Tsk. Sounds interesting, I'm not a huge Doctor Who fan but a comic gathering in a pub always peaks my interest.
